Do you really need ANOTHER black dress or dollar store trinket?

Admit it - your closet is full of had-to-have items that have been pushed to the back of the closet. Everyone does it. That black dress was too good of a bargain to pass up, but do you really need three of them?

You have enough notepads, pens, and magnets to fill your junk drawer. Yes, our purchases keep the economy going, but most of us buy far more than we need.

Remember that packaging, waste, and pollution are created to make these items available to you. If you trash those once-new goodies when you're no longer interested in them, they will live in a landfill for years and years. When purchasing a new item, ask yourself, "Do I REALLY need that item?" You will be surprised what you answer.

  1. But I really liked that dress that was on sale. Sometimes it's the thrill of getting something SO CHEAP!

  2. i lost my brother almost 10 years ago by the effects of drugs...i remember talking to him after one of the many trips he made to rehab. he would say that in rehab, between the meetings and councelling sessions, most everyone would stand outside and smoke cigs. he said that smoking cigs was more addictive than even heroin.

why the story? well,we are addicted, as a society, to shopping and eating. eating is a whole other story, but shopping, think about it. we do it for something to do, when we're bored, when we're down or blue, and even as an activity to get out of the house..shopping in general is the thing that has to be interupted for us to think about limiting wasteful purchases. we need to spend more time 'looking around and smelling the flowers', as my mother would say, rather than impressing on shopping. although the pureists would say, 'what about the economy?', well it'll take care of itself and we'll survive. there was a time when we did less spending and more smelling....

  3. I agree, we are a spoiled society and buy, buy, buy too much. I'm guilty of it too. I think it is just as important to THOUGHTFULLY donate, reuse or recycle these items when you no longer want them. We should NOT just throw things away...it is the easy way out. I look forward to the next GreenBerks tip related to "where to take your clutter".
